Nothin’ But Blue Skies

A few years ago I lived in Edmonton. For exactly 2 cold and snowy years. I was there for work and I remember telling my manager, who was Edmonton born and bred, how much I missed the trees and the ocean. I had exchanged my green home in Vancouver for a great job and endless views of flat, rather barren land. He suggested that I look to the sky. So I did.

One of the best decisions I made was to get myself a tiny rental apartment in the sky – the 19th floor of The Hendrix. The view over the river and the seemingly endless flat was amazing. And that is really where it began, my fascination, with the sky.

My intention was to write about sunsets. But as I looked through my vast array of photos I realized that as showy as a good sunset might be, the sky delivers so many more notes. So here I am, writing about all of it; sunrises, sunsets, clouds, and the amazing ranges of blue between a stormy day

and a clear night.

Is it just me, or does this look like a spine?

There is the impossible blending of pink and orange that can only be recreated with a box of children’s crayons.

In the winter, there is fire in the sky.

Fading to soft greys and pinks at dusk.

So many clouds.

After many watchful mornings and evenings, I have learned that some of the greatest skies are reserved for moments with the most intriguing clouds.

Van Gogh has been known to grace a Ucluelet sunrise.

So it is that now, when I am seeking solace, rest, and inspiration, I look to the sky.
